Population and Nationality

At the end of 2023, the permanent population of the province was 10.43 million, an increase of 160000 from the end of the previous year. The urbanization rate of the permanent population is 62.46%, an increase of 0.97 percentage points. In terms of gender composition, there are 5.54 million males and 4.89 million females. From the perspective of age structure, there are 2.05 million people aged 0-15, 6.64 million people aged 16-59, and 1.75 million people aged 60 and above.

Location

Hainan Province is located in the most southern part of China, and includes Hainan Island as well as the Zhongsha, Xisha, and Nansha archipelagoes, and the surrounding sea areas. Hainan Island itself is 33,900 sq. km., and the province’s sea area covers 2 million sq. km. Hainan is China’s second largest island (only Taiwan is larger), and is China’s smallest province in land area, but largest in sea area. The capital city is Haikou.

Resources and Environment

In 2023, the comprehensive energy consumption of industrial enterprises above designated size in the province was 16.8144 million tons of standard coal, an increase of 32.6% over the previous year. Among them, the consumption of petroleum processing industry increased by 179.8%, the consumption of chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry increased by 8.3%, the consumption of electricity and heat production and supply industry increased by 19.6%, the consumption of non-metallic mineral products industry decreased by 13.5%, and the consumption of paper and paper products industry decreased by 11.2%.

Climate and Temperature

Hainan is sunny over 300 days per year, making this the perfect tropical island vacation destination. The island enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, clean air, plenty of sunshine, green leaves all year round, long summers and mild winters. The monsoon season is winter, with the majority of the rain falling in north and central Hainan. Typhoons do occasionally affect Hainan, mainly in the late summer or early fall, so be sure to check the forecast before you arrive. Temperatures in the center of the island are relatively low, while those in the southwest are relatively high. The average temperature in January is 17.2 ℃, and in July 28.4 ℃.
